In May, 68-year-old Karl Landers of Orinda is believed to have died when he slipped and fell. His body has never been found.

Head out on this 3.9-mile out-and-back trail near McCloud, California. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 28 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, snowshoeing, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.

As you might expect, the name “Lower Falls” implies that this isn't the only waterfall on this stretch of the McCloud River. From Lower Falls, you can hike upriver to Middle and Upper Falls. Middle and Upper Falls are more impressive waterfalls, but Lower Falls is the best for swimming.

From McCloud travel 5 miles southeast along Highway 89. You will see a Forest Service sign on the left- hand side of highway that reads Fowlers and Lower Falls. Turn right onto the McCloud River Loop Road (40N44) at this sign. Continue along this road through the intersection and stay right at the fork.
