Since 1986, there have been 11 reported missing persons who disappeared from Mount Shasta or the surrounding area, none of whom have been seen or heard from since. But there is a much more notable disappearance that occurred in 1904.

Head out on this 3.9-mile out-and-back trail near McCloud, California. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 28 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, snowshoeing, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.

As you might expect, the name “Lower Falls” implies that this isn't the only waterfall on this stretch of the McCloud River. From Lower Falls, you can hike upriver to Middle and Upper Falls. Middle and Upper Falls are more impressive waterfalls, but Lower Falls is the best for swimming.

From the main intersection in the town of McCloud, drive east on Highway 89 for 5.5 miles. Turn right on the signed road for the McCloud River Loop. Continue for 0.7 miles. Stay right at the first intersection (turning left leads to Middle and Upper Falls).
